Brainstorming

A collaborative technique to generate a multitude of ideas for solving design challenges, encouraging creative thinking and diverse perspectives.

What is it?

Brainstorming is a group creativity method where participants generate ideas spontaneously in response to a specific problem or question, aiming to produce a broad set of solutions without immediate evaluation.

When to use it?

Use brainstorming during the ideation phase of the design process to explore a wide range of solutions, especially when tackling complex problems that benefit from diverse perspectives.

Why use it?

It encourages open-mindedness, leverages collective team creativity, and helps uncover innovative solutions that might not emerge through individual work.

How to use it?

Define a clear problem statement, assemble a diverse team, set ground rules (e.g., defer judgment, encourage wild ideas), and facilitate a session where participants freely share ideas, building upon each other's contributions.

How not to use it?

Avoid criticizing ideas during the session, allowing dominant personalities to overshadow others, or lacking a clear focus, as these can stifle creativity and reduce participation.
